The Iowa State Fair is a great way to celebrate and learn more about the agriculture and livestock industries
that are so important to Iowa’s heritage. Keep these safety tips in mind when enjoying your day at the fair:
• Both humans and animals should stay home if they are sick.
• Check the weather! Wear sunscreen and reapply at least every two hours. Take breaks and stay
hydrated, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Seek shelter immediately if you hear thunder or
see lightning, and be aware of severe weather alerts broadcast over the public address system.
• Wash your hands with soap and water after using the restroom, before eating, and after visiting
livestock barns. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used, but should not replace hand washing.
• Don’t drink and drive! If you plan to drink alcohol, make a plan ahead of time to use a taxi/rideshare
service or designate a driver who does not drink alcohol.
