The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), Iowa Department on Aging and Iowa Falls Prevention Coalition join partners across the state in recognizing September 22 as Falls Prevention Awareness Day.
“Falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries among Iowans 65 years of age and older and rates are rising,” said Binnie LeHew of the IDPH Office of Disability, Injury and Violence Prevention. “Between 2010 and 2014, the average cost of a hospital stay for a fall among Iowans 65 and older was $28,486.”
Falls are not a natural consequence of aging; injuries from falls are largely preventable and evidence-based programs can reduce falls through exercise programs to improve balance and strength, manage medications, reduce hazards in the home and improve vision.
