Falls, motor vehicle crashes, and sports injuries are the leading causes of traumatic brain injury in Iowa. More than 17,000 Iowans receive medical attention for a brain injury each year.
Brain injuries are not always visible to others and over 95,000 Iowans live with long-term disability from brain injury. Seek medical attention if you or someone you know receives a bump, blow or jolt to the head or body and have the following signs:
ADULTS:
- slurred speech
- repeated vomiting or nausea
- persistent or worsening headaches
- numbness, weakness or decreased coordination
CHILDREN:
- excessive crying
- slurred speech
- repeated vomiting or nausea
- numbness, weakness or decreased coordination
- unable to eat
