The increase in measles cases in Texas and other states is a concern for some individuals.
Measles is a virus that spreads easily through breathing, coughing, and sneezing. Measles very contagious. Infected people can spread measles from 4 days before through 4 days after a rash appears. A rash appears approximately 14 days after exposure.
Symptoms include: fever, cough, runny nose, eye irritation (red eyes) and a rash.
Vaccination is the best prevention from measles. Two-doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine are recommended. Those born before 1957 are presumed to have had measles. If you are in need of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine for your child or yourself, please contact us and we may be able to assist you. Winneshiek County Public Health has VFC (Vaccines for Children) and VFA (Vaccines for Adults) MMR vaccine available.
