With the recent flooding in Winneshiek County private wells and septic systems may be affected. Please continue to limit sewer usage (toilets, showers, washing machines, etc.) as this system is still running at capacity.

If a private well has flooded over the well housing it is important to have the water tested for coliform bacteria, E. Coli and nitrates. Water testing can be scheduled by contacting the Winneshiek County Environmental Health Office at (563)387-4120 or by purchasing a test kit from the Sanitarian’s office (563-387-4120) at the Winneshiek County Court House (201 W Main St, Decorah, IA 52101).

If your septic system is not working, it is likely due to the high levels of water in the soil. Do not use the system as it may cause backup into the home. Do not pump the septic tank at this time, if the groundwater table is too high, it may cause the tank to float out of the ground.

Please call the Winneshiek County Environmental Health Office at (563)387-4120 with any well, septic or water questions. If no one is available, please leave a message, and your call will be returned as quickly as possible. Please call the flood hot line at (563)277-5123 if you are unable to reach anyone at the above phone numbers.
